Alan was born to a government official father and a singer mother, although she grew up with her grandparents and her older brother in Danba, a place also known as 'Beauty Valley'. She started taking erhu and singing lessons from a young age, and being 9 she was selected as part of the main cast of a TV drama, but she didn't choose to pursue an acting career after all. When she was 10 she left her home to enter an erhu audition, which she passed ranking first, and she joined the school of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, founded in 1939 in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan. In 2003, at the age of 16, alan was accepted by the PLA (People's Liberation Army) Art Academy of Beijing. Being there she performed as a singer through China for some time, both with the 'Feel Fine Band'(非凡乐队) and as a solo artist as well. In August 2005 she released her first album, Sheng Sheng Zui Ru Lan (声 声醉如兰; Entranced With the Sounds of alan), made of covers of hit songs by more famous Chinese singers. Even being an indie release, it still got a chance to be re-released 1 year later as Yu Jian Alan (遇见阿兰; Meeting alan), including 1 new song and a few tracklist order changes. In October 2006 alan was selected along with Wei Chen to represent Mainland China in the 9th Asia New Singer Competition, and they ranked 2nd losing only to Filipina's Maria Donna Taneo by 0,005 points. While still being part of the PLA Art Academy, she entered an Avex Trax audition on the last day, held in Beijing in April 2006. She appeared dressed in her military school uniform with a ponytail and sang 2 Japanese songs, Never End by Namie Amuro and Nada Sousou by Rimi Natsukawa. The judges became amazed with alan, so after a big applause they decided that she deserved a Japanese debut. In 2007 she graduated in both singing and erhu with excellent results from the PLA Art Academy, and headed to Tokyo in September. 2 months later her debut single, Ashita e no Sanka (明日への讃歌) was released and her Japanese career started! Through her career alan has been selected to sing some important songs, like 2 charity singles released in both Japan and China to raise funds to help victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, NHK's special show about the environment Save The Future theme song, and also the 2 theme songs for the most expensive Asian movie ever released, RED CLIFF.
